1. What Is Parent Coaching...& Do You Need It?
Welcome to The Parenting Lab: A Journey Into Conscious, Empowered Parenting
Parenting is the only job we’re expected to do perfectly… with almost no training, no support, and no roadmap. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, stuck, triggered, or disconnected from the parent you want to be, you’re in the right place.
Welcome to The Parenting Lab.
I’m Brittney Gonzalez - a parent coach, educator, and the creator of this space - and I’m honored to walk with you as you rewrite your patterns, heal the past, and raise emotionally healthy, resilient children.
This blog post is an introduction to who I am, why I do this work, and what you can expect as you join me on the journey of transformational parenting.
Why I Became a Parent Coach
My background is in Marriage and Family Studies, with a focus in parenting and child development. I’ve spent over 13 years as an early childhood educator and became a Master Certified Parent Coach through the Jai Institute for Parenting.
But the truth?
I didn’t start doing this work for myself until my kids were teenagers.
For years, I parented from a place of:
- unhealed childhood wounds
- dysregulation
- emotional triggers
- and a nervous system constantly stuck in survival mode
I wasn’t a yeller, but I withdrew. I shut down. Their emotions felt too big, too overwhelming, too confronting. And as they got older, their struggles felt personal - like a reflection of my inadequacy.
The breaking point came when I realized my relationship with them was slipping through my fingers. I knew something had to change. And that change had to start with me.
Through years of studying trauma, relationships, nervous system science, and conscious parenting, I began to practice what I now teach. It was slow, humbling work - work I am still doing - but it transformed my relationship with my children.
And it transformed me.
That’s why I’m here.
Because I know firsthand that you can’t change your parenting without healing what’s underneath it.
A Holistic Approach to Parenting: Mind, Body, Energy, and Inner Work
In this space, we don’t just talk about behavior charts or discipline hacks. I teach parenting through multiple lenses, including:
- nervous system regulation
- attachment science
- psychodynamics
- energy work
- archetypes
- inner-child healing
- mindfulness and embodiment
I lean heavily into archetypes - I’m a Sage at my core - which means I’m committed to depth, soul-level connection, truth-telling, wisdom, and perspective. If you’re drawn to parenting that integrates both science and spirituality, you’ll feel right at home here.
What Makes Parent Coaching Different From Therapy?
One of the questions I’m asked most often is:
“What exactly does a parent coach do?”
Here’s the simplest way to explain it:
Imagine you’re an athlete. You break your leg.
A doctor helps you heal the injury - they treat the past injury, stabilize what was broken, and create the conditions for repair.
But once the bone is healed?
You don’t need a doctor.
You need a coach.
A coach helps you rebuild strength, move with confidence, and step back into your life with power and purpose - without re-injuring the parts of you that were once fragile.
Emotional wounds work the same way.
Healed wounds still hurt sometimes.
Old pain still surfaces.
Stress reveals old patterns.
When that happens, most of us don’t know what to do with the pain - so we yell, withdraw, overreact, or lose our grounding.
My job as a parent coach is to help you:
- understand your triggers
- regulate your nervous system
- build emotional resilience
- learn practical tools that work in real-life parenting
- change generational patterns
- and rewrite the story you’re passing down to your children
If you are navigating severe trauma, abuse, or clinical mental health concerns, I will always guide you toward a licensed therapist. Coaching and therapy work beautifully together, but they are not the same thing - and it’s crucial that we honor that boundary.
Is This the Right Space for You?
If you’re here, chances are you’re carrying something heavy.
Maybe you’re:
- stuck in the same parenting cycle again and again
- overwhelmed by stress, anger, or worry
- feeling disconnected from your kids
- struggling with chaos or dysregulation at home
- realizing that the way you were raised simply doesn’t work for your children
- reading all the books but getting no traction
- not on the same page as your partner
- longing to feel more calm, connected, and confident
If any of that resonates… you’re in the right place.
Parenting isn’t about perfection.
It’s about awareness, healing, and growth - from the inside out.
And I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not broken.
Your children are not broken.
Your parenting is not broken.
You don’t need to be fixed.
You just need support, tools, and a path forward.
