36. How to Get the Most Out of Parent Coaching (and Any Transformational Parenting Work)
Parenting is the only job where we’re expected to just know what we’re doing… with zero training and almost no support. We’re handed these tiny humans and somehow expected to rise above our own conditioning, heal old wounds, stay regulated, communicate well, set boundaries, and guide another person toward emotional maturity - all while managing careers, relationships, mental health, family demands, and a never-ending list of responsibilities.
And when we struggle - which every parent does - we often assume the problem is us.
Not the lack of support.
Not the lack of guidance.
Not the unrealistic expectation that we should somehow parent differently than we were parented.
So many parents land in this place of:
“I know I want to parent differently… but how do I actually do that?”
Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, but what I offer here in The Parenting Lab is the next best thing: partnership, guidance, and a space to grow.
After years of coaching parents, I’ve learned something important:
Parents don’t need a manual.
They need a witness.
They need a partner.
They need a space to explore, reflect, and be gently challenged - not judged.
And that, at its core, is what parent coaching really is.
In this post, I’m going to walk you through:
- What parent coaching actually is
- What parent coaching is not
- The five practices that help you get the most out of any intentional parenting work
- The different ways you can begin this work - no matter your time, budget, or circumstances
If you're longing for more conscious, grounded, regulated parenting, this is your guide.
What Parent Coaching Actually Is
Parent coaching isn’t about fixing your child or memorizing scripts. It’s not about telling you what to do or handing you a list of hacks.
Parent coaching is a space for exploration - of you.
It’s where you begin to understand:
- the patterns beneath your reactions
- the beliefs underneath your decisions
- the stories your body carries
- the conditioning you’ve been operating from without even realizing it
When you work with a parent coach, you’re not getting a playbook.
You’re getting a partner - someone who walks with you, not ahead of you.
The process is:
- active
- collaborative
- insight-driven
- focused on aligned action
Coaching is future-focused.
We’re not diving deep into your entire life story or analyzing every memory.
We’re acknowledging what is, understanding how it shows up in your parenting, and creating meaningful steps toward who you want to become next.
And the truth is this:
Your child doesn’t need to change for you to become the parent you want to be.
You don’t need a different version of your child.
You need a deeper connection with the version of yourself that’s already trying so hard.
Parent coaching focuses on you - your nervous system, your triggers, your expectations, your boundaries, your emotional world.
Because most breakthroughs don’t come from techniques.
They come from awareness.
What Parent Coaching Is Not
(…because sometimes expectations get blurred by therapy, social media, or hope.)
Let’s clear this part up, because clarity is everything.
1. Parent coaching is not therapy
We’re not diagnosing you, unpacking your childhood trauma, or analyzing your past in depth.
Therapy is for healing wounds.
Coaching is for growing awareness and moving forward.
2. Coaching is not focused on the past
Your history matters - of course it does - but we don’t stay there.
We use it only to understand what’s shaping the present.
3. Coaching is not venting about your kids
We absolutely talk about your child’s behavior.
But we don’t stay in blame or frustration.
We move toward meaning, clarity, intention, and understanding.
4. Coaching is not diagnosis or treatment
No labels. No pathologizing. No “what’s wrong with them?”
This work is rooted in curiosity, not categories.
5. Coaching is not passive listening
This isn’t a place where I nod and take notes.
It’s a dialogue - active, reflective, and movement-focused.
6. And it’s not a tool for “fixing” your child
We’re not molding them into an easier personality.
We’re building your capacity, so their behavior naturally softens in response to your alignment.
7. Most importantly… coaching is not a quick fix
There are no magic phrases.
No hacks.
Transformation takes time.
But when the shifts happen? They last.
Three Ways to Engage in Parent Coaching - Depending on Your Needs
Not every parent has the same time, resources, or capacity.
That’s why The Parenting Lab offers multiple access points:
1. Individual Coaching - the deepest level of support
If you want an ongoing, personalized partnership, this is the most transformative option.
It’s intimate, relational, and tailored to your nervous system, family dynamics, values, and goals.
2. Online Courses - The Parenting Lab Series
If you have time but limited resources, these courses are the next best thing to coaching.
Each lesson feels like sitting in session with me: reflective, guided, compassionate, challenging, practical.
You move through the exact frameworks I use in coaching:
- triggers
- nervous system regulation
- attachment
- boundaries
- emotional awareness
- connection
- values
The series is growing to 12 “Labs” - and the first six are available now.
3. The Parenting Lab Podcast - the most accessible entry point
If all you have right now is time, start here.
Every episode helps you understand the why behind the what in parenting.
It’s not a show of tips - it’s a space for reflection, insight, and gentle but powerful growth.
And yes - you can have real transformation here, too…
if you engage with the work.
The 5 Practices That Will Transform Your Parenting Work
No matter how you enter this work, these five practices will help you get the absolute most out of it.
1. Show Up
Not just physically - mentally and emotionally.
Let your body arrive.
Let your nervous system settle.
Presence is where insight lands.
2. Be Honest
Honesty is the gateway to clarity.
Clarity is the gateway to change.
Pretending delays transformation.
Truth invites it.
3. Do the Work
Transformation isn’t passive.
It’s practiced - in real moments, with real feelings, real resistance, real growth.
4. Come With Questions
Curiosity deepens every insight.
Ask:
“What is this moment trying to show me?”
“What about this feels familiar?”
“What part of me is being activated here?”
Discomfort is often a doorway.
5. Prepare to Be Challenged
Not harshly - lovingly.
I won’t let you stay in old patterns.
Growth requires friction.
But it’s the kind that leads to freedom, clarity, and alignment.
Why Willpower Isn’t Enough - And Awareness Changes Everything
Most parents don’t struggle because they lack effort.
They struggle because they’re relying on willpower to manage something that actually requires awareness.
Willpower collapses under stress.
Awareness gives you a path through it.
Awareness asks:
- What’s happening in my body?
- What story is being activated?
- What’s the unmet need here?
- Why does this moment feel so big?
- What part of me is being stirred?
Awareness is the difference between reacting and responding.
Between chaos and clarity.
Between parenting on autopilot and parenting with intention.
That’s what coaching activates.
The Parenting Lab Is a Space for Real Transformation
Now you know:
- what parent coaching is
- what it isn’t
- the ways to step into this work
- and the five practices that make transformation possible
None of this is passive.
None of this is easy.
But all of it is possible.
And the fact that you’re here - reading, reflecting, exploring - means you’re already doing the work.
Parenting is about showing up again and again with intention and curiosity.
It’s about growing your capacity to respond instead of react, to guide instead of control, to nurture instead of fix.
The Parenting Lab isn’t just coaching, courses, or a podcast.
It’s a space for transformation.
A space for reflection.
A space for honoring the parent you are and the parent you’re becoming.
Thank you for being here.
I’m honored to walk this journey with you.
